Cameron's baptism was on Sunday, September 12th. It was a beautiful mass with plenty of friends and family to celebrate our little boy's big day. Preparation for the day was of course filled with memories. Take the cake for instance. Sometime between making a test for school and changing a poopy diaper I got the wonderful idea to make Cameron's cake. I could envision it in all it's delicious glory. A five layer round cake lightly frosted with a chocolate cream filling. The icing was the palest shade of baby blue with my baby's name in perfect script. Here's what really happened. I made a cake once in home ec. Note to what should have been "self": decorating a cake does not come back to you like riding a bike and spending a 60 minute class period decorating one cake will not qualify you to work at Haydel's Bakery. Well it started just as I had hoped. I wanted a round cake, but I poured the batter into a 13x9 pan and baked the damn thing before I realized what I had done. I didn't have a tray to put a 13x9 pan on so I used a tupperware lid which would later result in the entire top half of the cake being ripped off upon flipping. Frosting became my best friend during this process. I used an ENTIRE tub of frosting for just the filling. Then the top layer decided to split in half so I figured frosting functions sort of like caulk and I just filled all the cracks in. I used a total of 2 tubs of frosting for the outside white part, but I needed my pale blue icing. Thank God I made 4 cups of it because I used it all. I ended up dropping my cake decorator utensil, which just so happens to be the size and weight of a small child, into the middle of the cake. At this point there's only one thing left to do: fill in the gaping hole with all the frosting I can find. Mission accomplished.
I think the cake is beautiful! Look I'm in the same boat, I had the brilliant idea to make not only Coen's smash cake for his birthday next month, but all of the cupcakes, too. And I'm going to decorate them all fancy... stay tuned. By the way, I find Cameron's looking more like Brian lately. Something in the eyes. He's precious!
